About the Festival:
Nine years ago, Austin Film Society intern Kris Deforest, also an Alamo Drafthouse employee at the time, first introduced us to Quentin Tarantino. At that meeting, we stayed up until the wee hours watching exploitation trailers from the Alamo archives, a night that remains a highlight of our closeted fanboy lives. That relationship grew into the AFS-sponsored “annual” QT Fest at the Alamo Drafthouse, 9 days of exploitation double and triple bills that is hands down our absolute favorite series in ten years of running the theater.

When we made the final decision to shutter the doors of the original Drafthouse location, we put the word out to many of our favorite guests to come back, hang out and raise a glass to the memory of the old place. One of the first to respond, despite being swamped with pre-release obligations for Grindhouse, was Quentin.

Quentin Tarantino will be returning to the original Alamo Drafthouse Cinema one final time. We are dubbing this final series "Last Night at the Alamo Grindhouse." Sure, our weekly Weird Wednesday and Terror Thursday screenings will continue the tradition at the new Alamo Drafthouse at the Ritz, but to me the original Alamo will always be our Grindhouse theater.

For those who haven't been to any of the QT Fest events, here's the ground rules: Quentin is joining us as a fellow movie nerd to hang out and share some of his favorite films with us. He's very approachable to talk, before and after the movies, but all any of us want to talk about is the movies we are watching. The vibe is all very low-key and casual. There's no autographs, and for the love of God, don't even think about bringing a copy of that script you've been working on.

Tickets will be available on this website to Heroes of the Alamo members and Fantastic Fest Badge holders exclusively at 1 PM, Friday, May 4. If there are tickets still available, these will go on sale to the general public at 1 PM on Monday, May 7. To purchase a Fantastic Fest badge, go to www.fantasticfest.com. We are selling nightly triple feature tickets only. A limited number of standby tickets will be available at the door. We will also have stand-by tickets available for the 2nd and 3rd features of the night.

A portion of the proceeds from these screenings will benefit the Austin Film Society.

188 BR - It is empty.

Welcome to the first of a series of posts that will chronicle the rise of the new downtown Alamo Drafthouse theater a.k.a. Alamo Drafthouse at the Ritz (henceforth referred to as the Ritz). I will be updating this site with weekly posts (every Sunday) documenting the progression of the new theater with lots of images and information about it and its construction.

A little bit about that number up there: 117 BR. The “BR” stands for “Before Ritz.” It is supposed to function as a kind of countdown to opening night (henceforth referred to as Day Zero), and I’m obviously riffing off the whole BC/AD thing. But I did want to have some kind of gimmick going on here, and that’s what I came up with.

However, it should be clear that even though my countdown places Day Zero on Friday, August 24, I must stress that I picked this date randomly. Let me make this clear:

Friday, August 24 IS NOT opening night at the Ritz.

In fact, in speaking with Tim before Weird Wednesday last week he told me that the next three weeks are really going to determine when opening night might be. So stay tuned. It is very likely that I will be doing some sort of time warp fudging with my countdown. With any luck, I will be warping backward (subtracting dates) rather than forward.

And if it turns out my somewhat random date choice is correct, well then, wouldn’t that be cool?

But let there be no mistake, a grand opening in August of this year is the goal. And remember, as Tim mentioned in his post below, June 27 is the official closing date of the original Alamo Downtown location. Be sure to get your fill before it’s gone, folks. This place is history (pun intended).

So, on Tuesday I made my first visit to the site. Daniel met me at the door as I said, “You weren’t kidding about the state of this place.” The floor was dirt and there were small tractors taking debris out the back door. Daniel gave me a quick glimpse of some of the plans: “You,” he said while gesturing in my direction “are standing where the bar is going to be.” If you look at the picture to the right, I was standing at the end of that protruding wall. “And this,” he said standing across from me, “is where the stairs are going to lead up to the theaters.”

When I showed up again on Thursday it was pretty much the same, except for the addition of a few ditches. Oh, and it was a hell of a lot more dusty in there, hence the cool streams of light that I couldn’t get enough of (I took a lot of pictures of it). Anyway, these ditches are for plumbing, and, according to Corey from HHCC, the big one in the kitchen area (in this photo) is for a grease trap.

Isn’t this the kind of trivial information you were wondering about? Alright, so maybe this isn't the most stellar post to open a series, but you've got to start somewhere. It’ll get a hell of a lot more interesting when construction begins, I can guarantee it.

There are a bunch more photos on my Flickr page. Just click HERE to go to my “Alamo @ The Ritz” photo set.

Fun fact: The demolition of the Ritz interior produced 440 cubic yards of concrete and dirt. Yeah. Think about it.

Martha Kelly to do Pretty Woman!

So, to reiterate what you have hopefully already figured out - John Erler's MASTER PANCAKE THEATER is very similar to THE SINUS SHOW, which he was also a founding member of. Both shows feature three comedians talking on microphones during a bad movie. Both shows feature a break in the middle of the movie and a skit that's inspired by the lunacy onscreen. But PANCAKE is not SINUS, and Erler is doing some different things with this new show.

One of the most inspired new addition to the formula of the show is that with PANCAKE, there isn't a regular cast of three. John Erler and Joe Parsons will be there for each show they do, but the third heckler's microphone will be open for a rotating comedian to come in with each movie they do. This afternoon, Erler announced that Martha Kelly will be joining the group for the entire run of PRETTY WOMAN (Fridays this May at the Alamo Downtown), which is a fitting title for her to join in for, as she's also the first female to be a regular part of PANCAKE or SINUS.

Martha's a former Austin resident (and Funniest Person in Austin from 2000) now living in L.A. She's been on HBO's "Premium Blend", "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson", and Conan O'Brien. On top of that she is a delightfully dark, funny, yet somehow warm person, and we're excited to have her hang out with us at the theater for the next month. Here's some of her
recent work on "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson", which should definitely give you a sense of her dark warmth:

The Moth Story Tour is coming to the Alamo Thursday May 3!

The Moth Story Tour Show is a change of pace for us. We're pretty pumped up about this event at our downtown theater. It's pretty unusual for a movie theater to host something like the Moth Story Tour but we feel like our crowd will really appreciate it.

What is The Moth?

The Moth, a not-for-profit storytelling organization, was founded in New York in 1997 by poet and novelist George Dawes Green, who wanted to recreate in New York the feeling of sultry summer evenings on his native St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, where he and a small circle of friends would gather to spin spellbinding tales on his friend Wanda’s porch. After moving to New York, George missed the sense of connection he had felt sharing stories with his friends back home, and he decided to invite a few friends over to his New York apartment to tell and hear stories. Thus the first “Moth” evening took place in his living room. Word of these captivating story nights quickly spread, and The Moth moved to bigger venues in New York. Today, The Moth conducts six ongoing programs and has brought more than 2,000 live stories to over 60,000 audience members.

Why “The Moth?"

The screen around Wanda’s porch had a hole where moths would flutter in and get trapped in the light. Similarly, George and his friends found that the characters in their best stories would often find themselves drawn to some bright light—of adventure, ambition, knowledge—but then find themselves burned or trapped, leaving them with some essential conflict to face before the story could reach its conclusion. So George and his original group of storytellers called themselves “The Moths.” George took the name with him to New York, where he hoped that New Yorkers, too, would find themselves drawn to storytelling as moths to a flame. They did. With no advertising, through sheer word of mouth, every show to date has sold out in 48 hours or less.

THE MOTH STORY TOUR brings the back porch storytelling experience to the Alamo for one night only with a cast of distinguished yarn-spinners:

The Theme: Out on a Limb: Stories from the Edge

Host and Storyteller:

Jonathan Ames (author, Wake Up, Sir!, The Extra Man, recurring guest, The Late Show with David Letterman)

Storytellers:

Ophira Eisenberg (stand-up comic, Comedy Central's Premium Blend, VH1's Best Week Ever)

Kelley Caleb Hunt (Austin local and winner of The Moth's What's Your Story contest on MySpace)

Edgar Oliver (author, The Man Who Loves Plants and a treasure of Bohemian New York)

Turk Pipkin (Austin local, author, Fast Greens, When Angels Sing and actor, Sopranos)

To find out more about the Moth see: The Moth.org.

Also check out the Moth's myspace page.

The event starts at 6:30 with drinks, greetings and salutations and the stories begin at 7:30. You can buy tickets by clicking here.

Coming Soon to an Alamo Near You

FOUND MAGAZINE presents
DIRTY FOUND, LIVE!
AND A BEVY OF OTHER SPECIAL GUESTS, ALL LIVE IN PERSON!

Wow. That's all I can say to this upcoming week, cause we've got super special guest after super special guest after super duper special guest, and the specialness just keeps on coming. First off, the craziest news: Seth Rogen and Michael Cera are coming to the Alamo South Lamar for a special sneak screening of SUPERBAD. It's a screening being set up by Sony Pictures and we've only got 20 tickets to give away, but we're going to lottery those out from a pool of FANTASTIC FEST 2008 badge holders. If you've been waiting to prepurchase your badge, now's the time!

But that's just the start. Anyone who's been to see one of the FOUND MAGAZINE shows at the Alamo Downtown knows how bizarrely fun it is to see the best finds of the year presented live. Well now the guys behind DIRTY FOUND, the naughty spin-off, are on tour themselves, and they'll be stopping by the Alamo this Monday! Are there finds they can't print in their magazine? We're not sure. But we know that we'll be sitting in the front row, ready to find out.

The makers of RED VS. BLUE, the super popular Internet series created from the world of HALO, will also be onhand this week, presenting some of their new favorites and answering your questions at TWO shows on Sunday night. They're coming in as part of our official 10 Year Anniversary because we've had them in before and they're always some of our favorite guests. We'll be playing HALO before the movie, too, giving you plenty of opportunities to get all killtastic on us.

THE MOTH story tour is coming by on Thursday, also, so the live entertainment doesn't stop, ever. The idea behind THE MOTH is pretty beautiful in its simplicity too: without the aid of notecards or paper, people tell stories. Stories about their lives, stories about their day, stories of all kinds. For the past few years it's been a sold out smashing success for the NPR and slam poetry crowds of New York, and now they're finally coming to Austin!

BOOKPEOPLE presents
FARLEY GRANGER LIVE with
STRANGERS ON A TRAIN

Through a long and varied career, Farley Granger has appeared in dozens of movies and many more television shows, but the film he is best known for is one of the most suspenseful motion pictures ever made, an enduring classic, STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. Granger plays a young tennis pro travelling by train who inadvertantly makes a very nasty deal with a very nasty man, played by the late, great Robert Walker. In what Granger assumes is a dark joke, they make a pact to kill one inconvenient person for the other. For heir Walker, that inconvenient person is his father, for Granger it is his wife. Soon after the train ride is over, Granger realizes that Walker was dead serious and now he has to carry out his part of the plan or be targeted himself. It's an amazingly lean and simple scenario, carried through to perfection by a great director, Alfred Hitchcock, and two great stars; Farley Granger and Robert Walker. We are truly honored to welcome Farley Granger to the Alamo to share stories about working with Hitchcock and much more.

JON GRIES LIVE with
NAPOLEON DYNYAMITE and JOYSTICKS
Saturday, May 5, at the Alamo Downtown

This is truly everybody's lucky day, because the one and only Jon Gries is coming to the Alamo Drafthouse. All the world knows him as the iconic Uncle Rico from the colossal hit NAPOLEON DYNAMITE. And he'll be here to toss the football around with YOU! We don't really need to tell you about NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, do we? Suffice to say it's the best high school movie since FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH and Jon Gries' Uncle Rico provides some of the biggest laughs of the movie.

But that's not the only side-splittingly hilarious movie we'll be showing with Jon Gries. We're also screening the 1983 video arcade comedy JOYSTICKS, starring a very young Jon Gries as the bad ass punk villain King Vidiot. It's an awesomely cool movie and it's a lifelong dream for a generation of uber-geeks to be able to watch this one with the man himself. Click here for tickets to that show!

Last Night at the Alamo... June 27

We caught wind of this story through the internet... Nightclub Tycoon to open Pangaea in former Alamo Drafthouse location.

Here's a link to the Existing Pangaea nightclub website.

Pangaea...not my personal cup of tea, but I hope it works out well for the warehouse district. Anyhow, with this news, we have nailed down a final night for the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown.... The "last night at the Alamo" is slated for June 27. I'm having a hard time even writing down that date and making it F-I-N-A-L. 409 Colorado has meant everything to me for the past decade and we'll be very sad to let it go. I cried when I went to go and see OH GOD, so I'm sure there will be tears shed over raised glasses on June 27th.

We'll have three shows, something special for 3 different crowds that we serve at the Alamo. We will announce the final month's lineup in early May and tickets for the final night at the Alamo will go on sale at noon on May 27, one month out from the night itself.

For the last show, a very special Weird Wednesday event, your ticket will include a ratcheting wrench. Please take your chair with you as you leave.

Check back to this blog, we'll be posting regular updates on the new Alamo Drafthouse at the Ritz construction project. I guarantee you, once you see this incredible new space, your sadness for losing the old location will fade away.

UPDATE: 5/25:
We are just over a month away from closing the doors of our original Colorado Street location forever, and even though we're super excited to open the doors at the Ritz later this summer, saying goodbye to a room that has been a second home for many of us is still going to be a memorable and bittersweet occasion. To celebrate the history of the theater, we've put together a triple feature like nothing we've ever done before, featuring a six-course feast with matching wine pairings to the movie BIG NIGHT at 7pm, an amazing Sensuround screening of EARTHQUAKE at 9:45pm, and then we're going out with a special WEIRD WEDNESDAY screening of NIGHT WARNING with Susan Tyrell live, then at the end of the night select ticket holders will be given a wrench and they'll take their seat home with them. Tickets for all shows will go on sale this Sunday, May 27, a month away from the final night itself, and once they're gone, they are gone forever.

We'll be opening up blocks of tickets at the box office Downtown at noon on Sunday, then opening up online ticket sales at 1pm. Tickets for the full on triple feature will be $225 and will include the whole feast with matching wine during Big Night, a hand silk-screened commemorative poster and the seat you're sitting in. Double feature tickets for EARTHQUAKE and NIGHT WARNING will be $85. For Heroes of the Alamo members and Fantastic Fest badge holders, tickets are $200 & $70 respectively. Individual tickets may be available at the door on the night of the show.

All of these proceeds will then go straight into the Ritz construction fund so we can try to push that along and open the doors there with a gala opening night celebration just as soon as possible.

2007 Rolling Roadshow Tour Dates to be announced on Tuesday

UPDATE: We've had a bit of a delay in our announcment; expect word on the final lineup within the next few days!!

The final lineup of the 2007 Rolling Roadshow Tour will be announced at noon on Tuesday, April 24. This is the third outing for the tour, an offshoot of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema's outdoor screening system, the Rolling Roadshow, and if I do say so myself, it is going to be the best year yet.

Every summer, we take off from Austin, Texas for a whirlwind tour of the United States, screening famous movies in famous places. We've been to the Field of Dreams in Iowa with Kevin Costner live in person, Devil's Tower in Wyoming for a screening of Close Encounters and Lake Powell for a screening of Planet of the Apes.

The Rolling Roadshow is not simply a series of outdoor movie screenings though. The tour is the culmination of everything we have worked towards at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema: fantastic Cinema happenings, with complete movie immersion, celebrity guests, wacky tie-ins, contests, scavenger hunts, and the thrill of watching your favorite movies in the exact locations in which they were filmed.

Although we can't divulge the schedule until April 24, the 2007 line-up is going to be the best yet! The 2007 Rolling Roadshow Tour kicks off on July 18 in Texas with a cross-country scavenger hunt and closes with a cross country scavenger hunt ending in Texas on August 15. Hot Fuzz opens at Village and Lamar this weekend!

This weekend, we are opening one of the most fan-anticipated movies of the year: HOT FUZZ. The trio responsible for SEAN OF THE DEAD (Nick Frost, Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright) are back with an adrenaline-fueled comedy romp. We screened the film last month downtown and the crowd reaction was overwhelmingly positive.

"Shaun of the Dead was no fluke. It was a signal, a harbinger of the comic genius that was to come out of a couple of movie geeks from Britain. I haven’t laughed this long and this hard in I don’t know how long. Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are all busy rewriting the rules of the modern comedy. Nobody out there is doing anything close. And no one is safe. Lord only knows who, and what, they’ll take to town next. But god damnit I’m ready to see it." - Ain't It Cool News

Tired of the rehashed half-hearted comedies coming out of Hollywood? Do yourself a favor and check out Hot Fuzz. It's a breath of fresh air, albeit an air tinged with blood and testosterone.

Before the Alamo... the Tejon

Some of you folks may not know that the original Alamo Drafthouse Cinema on 4th and Colorado was not our first theater venture. In 1994 and 1995, Karrie and I operated the Tejon Theater in east Bakersfield, California. Before the Tejon, I was an engineer for Shell Oil, Karrie was a research microbiologist in San Francisco. I had been with Shell for almost 2 years and was looking for an exit strategy. On my way to work, I passed the Tejon Theater and one morning I noticed a "for lease" sign. A week later, I was signing on the dotted line and entering the theater business with absolutely no experience. We were both 24 years old. The Tejon was were we cut our teeth, learned the business and developed a lot of the shows that eventually became signature events at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. As we are drawing to a close on the original Alamo chapter of our lives, I'm starting to feel a little nostalgic for the Tejon days.

We had some great memories at that theater, but it was also very difficult. Business was lousy, and we were very, very poor. We were on "the wrong side of the tracks," and we had a hard time getting folks out to the movies we promoted. For that two year period, we didn't have any employees. It was just me and Karrie 7 days a week, and we lived in the theater too. We built a room behind the screen that also served as a hospitality room for bands when we would do live shows. These concerts were the only real influx of money we had and were what made it possible for us to eventually leave Bakersfield and start up fresh with the Alamo in Austin.

When we went back to Bakersfield for an outdoor show in 1996, the Bakersfield Californian newspaper ran an article about our early days at the theater and our return with the Rolling Roadshow Tour 10 years later.

I've dug out the scant few photos I still have and have posted them to our Flickr Page. I've also started uploading a few photos from the very early days of the Alamo Drafthouse downtown. There will be many more to come, so check back often. We are also updating the Vintage Ritz photos set. Look for photos from The Ritz: The Metal Years coming soon, as well as some photos and articles from the very early days of the theater in the early 1930s.

Alamo Lamar and Village - Grindhouse exclusive!

Clearly, the Alamo Drafthouse is the only theater to go check out the new grindhouse flick; there is no other theater in the modern era so fully steeped in the grindhouse tradition. With our weekly Terror Thursday and Weird Wednesday grindhouse screenings, we have developed a diehard fanatic cult following for the genre. Speaking of which, if you enjoy yourself at Grindhouse, you should definitely plan on joining us at the Alamo downtown for these series. Every week we show two different grindhouse films (one Wednesday, one Thursday) on 35mm with a passel of vintage trailers to get the night started. Check out the Weird Wednesday and Terror Thursday signature pages to see the upcoming films. Quentin Tarantino himself has been known to attend these shows whenever he is in town.

For the opening of Grindhouse, we'll have a veritable cornacopia of vintage grindhouse trailers, plus once the film starts, experience the film even more fully with our specially-themed menu, featuring two meals taken directly from each of the films in Grindhouse.

The Alamo Village and the Alamo Lamar are the ONLY two theaters in the entire nation who are authorized to screen Grindhouse on Thursday at 11 PM. If that isn't a testiment as to where you should see the most kick-ass movie of the modern age, I'm not sure what else to tell you.

Not sold? Check out the only Grindhouse review you need to read courtesy of Ain't It Cool News. Read that and see if your grandma on her deathbed could keep you away.

Need even more? Hobo With A Shotgun creators and winners of the SXSW Grindhouse Trailer competition, Jason Eisener, Rob Cotterill, and John Davies have sent us a very special "Hobo with a Shotgun don't talk at the Alamo PSA," which will premiere at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in front of Grindhouse.

I got the chance to check out Grindhouse at the AFS premiere last week, and I give you my word, this mad Frankenstein of a movie packs more punches than a whole multiplex full of films.

Stars of Beerfest live in person April 19!

Even before today's bold announcement, April 19 was shaping up to be a great day for beer. We'll be screening the modern-day cult classic Beerfest, replete with all the trappings: beer pong in the lobby, extreme quarters and a beer flight inspired by the movie; a slate of five German beers and their competing American brews of the same style. On top of that, this event is in celebration of the Brewers Association Craft Brewers Conference, so you'll get to experience it with beer royalty from across the globe.

All of this is very cool; undoubtably a fun time. It's such a fun time, though, that the stars of the film, Jay Chandrasekhar (Barry) and Steve Lemme (Finkelstein) of Broken Lizard are flying in to be a part of the action. They'll introduce the film, answer any questions you may have, and they are intent on kicking everyone's ass in the competition to win actual glass beer boots, just like in the movie. If you love beer, there is no other place in this town that you should inhabit on April 19.
